Abstract

This research was conducted in coastal water of Dumai from March to April 2010 and aimed to: study water quality namely temperature, pH, salinity, DO, BOD5, COD, water clarity, oil & grease, and plankton; examine relationship between physical oceonography and oil & grease content; examine relationship between oil & grease content and structural plankton community; study society perception on coastal water quality around the coastal water of Dumai.

The method of this research was survey by using purposive sampling to collect samples. Oil & grease sampling method is grab sample, plankton sampling is composite sampling, and data collecting from respondents by interview & FGD. Water quality is studied and compared with seawater quality standard for biotic organism, analysed relationship between physical oceanography and oil & grease content and oil & grease content and structural plankton community respectively is multi-regression and simple-regression and is explained by spatial approach, and interview & FGD result was analysed using Likert Scale.

Coastal water quality of Dumai namely BOD5 and oil & grease content have exceeded seawater quality standard for biotic organism which has been specified. Physical oceanography and oil & grease content have significant relationship. It caused parameter of water quality moved to various places according to tidal current, so that plankton abundance was high at time of tide became difference at time of ebb. Relationship between oil & grease content and structural plankton community was very low and not significant because there are so many diatoms and dominated this kind of plankton because it is more resistant than the others plankton on pollutants including oil & grease. On the strength of structural plankton community index is described that water is polluted. This is supported by society’s negative perception toward this water quality.

Keywords: coastal water of Dumai, oil & grease,  water quality, physical oceanography, structural plankton community
